This is a close-up realistic depiction of a gaillardia flower. These flowers are in abundance in our garden in the summer and it’s impossible to view them without watching the bees busily working away. I’m inspired to paint these flowers regularly with their magnificent bursts of red and yellow colours. I used a deep tonal background with subtle hints of foliage to create a striking contrast between the flower and the background. I’ve used a loose yet realistic style to give the piece a sense of spontaneity and energy.
